Theory

Theory covers 2 diffrent sides of media, the audience and the narrative.

Audience
  • Uses and gratifications theory
is a theory that states that media is used due to the reasons like infomation we use media for the infomation it gives to us, personal identity where you look for almost role models in the media, social interaction a means for a viewer/user to socialise with other people and entertainment a means to escape the tedium of the world and to relax.

  • Hypodermic needle theory
the theory that we are injected ideas that we belive eg fashion we are injected what is fashion , whats cool and what not.

Narrative

The opening scene / teaser is very inportant it will decide if a possible viewer will watch or change channel. The teaser will most likely show the crime happening but with out the villians this draws the viewer into watchng the find out how. CIS Miami had a teaser where the girl was shown tied to a post and rocks being thrown it was restrictive as we only saw her in 3rd person and the rocks where thrown off camera. Sherlock showed multiple victims saying there last words crying.

Enigmas make a crime drama memerable and addictive to watch once u get caught in the enigma you have to solve it. Enigma's include in sherlock when he plays the murders game to see how he killed his victims, also in luther alice wants to know why luther is so hooked to his job. Sherlock last episode of season 2 sherlock jumps off a bulding yet you see him later on watching dr john watson at his grave.

The quest of a protagnist is in a cyclycal structure he/she has a problem trys to find out the resoulution it gets resoulved then something new becomes his/her problem, its usaly presented in a restrictive narrative where we the viewer only know as much as the protagonist.
