Theory

Theory covers 2 diffrent sides of media, the audience and the narrative.

Audience
  • Uses and gratifications theory
is a theory that states that media is used due to the reasons like infomation we use media for the infomation it gives to us, personal identity where you look for almost role models in the media, social interaction a means for a viewer/user to socialise with other people and entertainment a means to escape the tedium of the world and to relax.

  • Hypodermic needle theory
the theory that we are injected ideas that we belive eg fashion we are injected what is fashion , whats cool and what not.

Narrative

The opening scene / teaser is very inportant it will decide if a possible viewer will watch or change channel. The teaser will most likely show the crime happening but with out the villians this draws the viewer into watchng the find out how. CIS Miami had a teaser where the girl was shown tied to a post and rocks being thrown it was restrictive as we only saw her in 3rd person and the rocks where thrown off camera. Sherlock showed multiple victims saying there last words crying.

Enigmas make a crime drama memerable and addictive to watch once u get caught in the enigma you have to solve it. Enigma's include in sherlock when he plays the murders game to see how he killed his victims, also in luther alice wants to know why luther is so hooked to his job. Sherlock last episode of season 2 sherlock jumps off a bulding yet you see him later on watching dr john watson at his grave.

The quest of a protagnist is in a cyclycal structure he/she has a problem trys to find out the resoulution it gets resoulved then something new becomes his/her problem, its usaly presented in a restrictive narrative where we the viewer only know as much as the protagonist.

White chapel

I watched episode 3 in which the "bogeyman" comes out to play killing multiple people the police suspect it is a crazy villain that escaped a maximum security prison. it is mostly glamorous (not much gore) but there is a morgue scene. The programme is split with two characters one is the crime historian he is very factual only non fiction where as the protagonist are more open minded top what the victims describe the killer as.

Typical ingredients:
uniform police
morgue scene
murder

settings

The place where  a crime drama is set is very important. in shows like whitechapel it is delibratly set there for a reason (whitechapel was known for having jack the ripper a serial killer that has never been caught after killing upto 23 people). With in a setting there are subsettings like london is split by Luther that has the hard rough working class side of london and sherlock that has the posh upper class. The crimes set within luthers areas are more likely to be physical and more gory where as Sherlock crimes would be clever and glamourous this reflects on the audience for shows.
By using these settings these setting they become relevant to diffrent classes eg luther would be a working class man's show whereas sherlock would more likely be for upper class well educated viewers.

Set piece

Laboratory scene
The protagonist usually looks through a microscope or dusts an item for prints. It gives the viewer the impression that the user of the equipment is well educated it helps to develop the character also it could find evidence that could add extra suspects or could remove them. The most iconic items for a laboratory would be a microscope, test tube mixer. Language used would include fingerprints, DNA, fibre, hair techniqual words.

Interrogation scene
The detective has a suspect in empty room some heroins will use a form or torture or threats, mabye the sterotypical good cop bad cop. Usaly the suspect is sitting there the detective walks in and starts a tape recorder. Finds infromation and devolpes the detective and the suspect. Iconography would be the empty room with a 1 way mirror the tape recorder next to the wall on the table and 2 chairs. language used would be very limited and the question if a bad cop could be made to manipulate the suspect into saying something bad evidence, "your hair" "your dna".

 Eureka moment
Usally has a pan view of the detective panning around his head usaly has the detective finding some evidence that alows him/her to figure out how the crime was comited and who. Alows the plot to move onto the next scene usaly going after the villian. Hand infront of mouth thinking, and after the eureka moment the detective speeds up almost runs. language " wait i've got it! " " it was " "alibi".

Initial crime investigation
The detective arives shows badge to a officer then lifts tape and walks into the crime scene looks around for evidence gets an update from a police offiecer. Adds evience to the case that could give possible leads to add to the plot ot moves into the laborotory scene.  Lots police flashing blue lights police crime scene tape the evidence cards.

Arrest/confession

Crime flash back

Chase/dash

Notification of kin

Autopsy

Sherlock watched

Saw Sherlock season 2 episode 3 great episode
 main character :

Sherlock Holmes a quirky detective
John Watson Sherlocks side kick
James Moriarty the villain

Moriarty was releases by Sherlocks brother from prison as they couldn't get them to tell them a code that could hack anything. Sherlock was setup by moriarty to look like a fraud, Moriarty catches Sherlock out when they meet on the roof of a hospital he tells him that he has hired a gang of murders that have been told to kill all of his loved people and the people he is associated with.and if he doesn't jump of the building. Sherlock starts to do what he does best tries to get in Moriarty head to get the phone numbers for the murders to call them off. Moriarty shoots himself in the head. Sherlock makes John belive Moriarty then jumps. as John runs to Sherlocks body he is knocked over by a cyclist. Sherlock is in a pool of blood and is taken away on a hospital bed. Last scene John is talking to Sherlocks grave then it shows John from another angle then zooms out to show Sherlock watching John.

how i think he survived:
as Sherlock jumped there was a rubbish van in front of him i think he landed in that then jumped to the floor. in the previous episode they dealt with a drug that caused hallucination i think the cyclist drugged John as he was knocked over.

stereotypes of crime drama that were seen:

professionals the police that came after Sherlock
guns
stereotypical gangster (skin head with lots of tattoos sleeveless top )
the hero and villain (Sherlock is represented as a anti hero and a hero)

Character types

Crime dramas have may diffrent charcters types like Heros, heroines, Anti-heros , quirky detectives, bad-temperd detectives, rookies, buddy partners, grumpy superior officers, forensic scientists and pshychology experts. These roles realy on a symbiotic relationship where without the villian there is no crime with no crime there is no vitim without a victim there is no cop.

Heros

Theses characters only objective is to solve the crime and to restore peace, they usally stay on the right side of the law. This is Jack Bauer from 24 he sometimes sways to the wrong side of the law to get intel that could potentually save lifes. He is a realist he says the quote "I see fifteen people held hostage on a bus, and everything else goes out the window. I will do whatever it takes to save them, and I mean whatever it takes. ... Laws were written by much smarter men than me. And in the end, these laws have to be more important than the 15 people on the bus. I know that's right. In my mind, I know that's right. I just don't think my heart could ever have lived with it." this is how he sees torture as okay.

Heroins

Anti-heros
Dexter works for the forensic sciensts where he helps catch murders through the uses of his murderers mind. Even though he means good he still is a criminal, in his spear time he partisipates in the lovely passtime of murdering other murders. He abuses his power in the police by acsessing the murders that got away from the justice system.
